Located in North London, the borough of Haringey, encompassing Tottenham, is an area rich in history. Tottenham’s history dates back to medieval times, with its name appearing in the Domesday Book of 1086. The River Lee was a fundamental reason for early human settlement in the area and the Tottenham Marshes are on a flood plain of the River Lea. Tottenham High Road is one of the original six Roman roads leading out from London that connected Londinium (Roman London) to Eboracum (Roman York).

Over centuries, the area evolved from a rural village to an industrial hub between the wars hosting for example the Harris Lebus furniture factory at Ferry Lane. The Lea Valley is rich in industrial history with canals, locks, water reservoirs and pumping stations. One example of this is Markfield Park, the Tottenham sewage treatment works and pumping station. Tottenham’s historic core includes landmarks such as the Grade II-listed Tottenham Town Hall built in 1905 reflecting early 20th-century municipal pride. Tottenham is the home of Tottenham Hotspur football club and their new world class stadium.

Haringey is known for its exceptional green spaces including Tottenham Marshes, championed by the Friends of Tottenham Marshes. This area is a haven for wildlife especially migratory birds and is adjacent to the Walthamstowe Wetlands. Other notable parks include Alexandra Park, with its iconic palace and panoramic views, and Highgate Wood, a remnant of ancient woodland.

New Boating Facility at Stonebridge Lock, Tottenham

Our client, the Lea Valley Canoe & Cycle Company, asked us to design a new boating facility on the Lea River. The facility was to include boat storage, kayak rental, bike rental and repair plus spaces for community activity including meetings, educational visits from schools. A Honey extraction facility was included.

The project is designed on green belt land and therefore we needed to provide robust VSCs (very special circumstances) to justify building in this location. The VSCs included the significant public benefits of a new facility for community events and the sustainability of the project. Innovations included in the design include water recycling, power generation from the roof and well insulated design. The project was supported by the planning officers at Haringey council, however it is currently on hold awaiting funding.
